FaceOn works in your browser, so you never need the app to join or host. The app for Mac and Windows is the same FaceOn in a window of its own, plus what a browser tab can't do.
What it adds
- Meeting links open in the app. See "Opening meeting links" below.
- Mute from any app. During a meeting, Ctrl+Shift+A (⇧⌘A on a Mac) mutes and unmutes while another app is in front. Change it, or turn it off, in Settings → Desktop app → Mute shortcut.
- The tray or menu bar. Start or join a meeting, and during one, mute or leave. Closing the window keeps FaceOn there, unless you turn off Keep FaceOn in the tray (in the menu bar on a Mac). To quit, choose File → Quit FaceOn (FaceOn → Quit FaceOn, ⌘Q, on a Mac), or Quit FaceOn in the tray icon's menu.
- Google Calendar. Google doesn't allow connecting it inside apps, so Connect opens your browser at Google's consent screen; FaceOn notices when you're done.
- Your computer's sound when you share your screen, on Windows.
- Reminders with no browser open, at the time you chose in Settings → Notifications, with Join.
- Unread chat on the Dock or taskbar.
- Updates itself, quietly, and installs them when it restarts.
Install it
On a Mac or a Windows PC, Download for Mac or Download for Windows (on the front page, in a one-time card on Home, in your account menu, or in Settings → General) gets the installer for your computer; so does the Download page, /download, which offers every build on other computers and links to all releases. On a Mac, open the .dmg and drag FaceOn to Applications. On Windows, run the installer; it installs just for you, without asking for an administrator.
Your computer may warn you the first time you open it:
- Mac: if your copy of the app isn't signed yet, right-click FaceOn in Applications and choose Open, or go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway.
- Windows: if "Windows protected your PC" appears, choose More info → Run anyway. A signed app can show this for a short while after a new version comes out. An app that isn't signed shows it the first time, and doesn't open at all on a PC with Smart App Control on.
Email and password sign-in works in the app. Continue with Google and Continue with GitHub open your browser: sign in there, select Continue as …, and the app finishes signing you in. Signing out in the app leaves your browser signed in, and the other way round.
Opening meeting links
A meeting link opens in your browser first. Once you've signed the app in from that browser, it knows the app is on this computer, and the join page offers Open in the FaceOn app, beside Join in this browser. Tick Always open meeting links in the app to skip that choice.
You can change it in Settings → General → Open meeting links in the desktop app, on that browser: Ask each time, Always or Never. With Always, the join page opens the app at once, with Join in this browser in case it doesn't.
A link's passcode goes with it to the app, without passing through any server.
On a Mac
The first time you share your screen, macOS asks you to allow screen recording in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording. Turn FaceOn on there, then quit and reopen FaceOn.
Uninstall
- Mac: quit FaceOn from the menu bar, then drag it from Applications to the Trash.
- Windows: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → FaceOn → Uninstall.
